Best 1020 seed trays and humidity domes

A dome has to match the tray, and the tray has to fit the shelf. One published dome size is a good example to measure against.

Not tested. These picks come from the specifications each maker publishes, read on the date below. We have not used the products. See how we pick products. Prices and stock change, so check the current listing before you buy.

What to check on a tray set

  1. Outside size. Measure the rim. The rim size decides how many trays fit. See trays per shelf.
  2. Dome height. Utah State says to remove the dome once about half of the seeds have germinated. A tall dome gives room for seedlings until then. It also takes height from the light distance.
  3. Vents. Vents help you ease the dome off gradually.
  4. Drainage. Trays with holes need a second tray underneath. Trays without holes hold water and need careful watering.
  5. Cleaning. Utah State ties damping-off to cool, moist conditions, and says to let soil dry between waterings. Dirty trays and wet soil make that worse. See fans and damping-off.
