Can you start seeds on a bookshelf?

Yes, if a tray fits and the light can hang close enough. Check depth and height before you buy anything.

Check depth

A 1020 flat is about 21 x 11 inches on the outside, so the shelf needs at least 11 inches of depth, or about 21 inches if the tray sits sideways. Smaller trays and pots change that. Measure your own.

Check height

Add the height of the tray and dome, the height seedlings will reach, and the hanging distance for your light. See the distance guide: fluorescent figures range from 1 to 8 inches, and LED from about 8 to 12 inches. A shelf with only a few inches of clearance will suit seedlings only briefly.

Check the light

For a 24 x 12 inch shelf with 2-foot, 10 W bars, the calculator gives 1 bar, 10 W, and 1 tray. Fit depends on the real tray and fixture sizes, so use the calculator with your own numbers.

Other things

  • Wood and books can be damaged by water. Use a tray without drainage holes, or put a waterproof liner under it.
  • Keep a small fan on low where you can. Utah State recommends gentle airflow to help prevent damping-off. See fans and damping-off.
  • A fixture must hang from something. A bookshelf has no shelf above the top tier, so check how you will hang or fix a bar. See hanging lights.
