How to hang grow lights on a wire shelf
The sources agree on one thing: the light must come up as the plants grow. Plan the hanging method around that.
This page is practical advice, not from an extension source. The sources only say lights should be raised as seedlings grow. Check your own fixture's manual and weight.
What you need to decide first
- Where it hangs from. Most wire shelves have a shelf above each tier. The light usually hangs from the underside of that upper shelf.
- How high you need to go. See the distance guide. The gap between shelves has to fit the tray, the plant height and the hanging distance.
- Whether the fixture has hanging hardware. Many linkable bars come with clips, tape and cable ties. Barrina's 8-pack lists 16 installation clips, 16 double-sided tapes and 24 cable ties in the box.
Methods
- Adjustable chain or cord. Hang each end of the fixture from the shelf above with a short chain, or a cord with a ratchet hanger, and change the height by changing the link or ratchet.
- Cable ties around the wire. Fasten the fixture to the wires of the shelf above. Cheap and quick, but changing height means cutting and replacing ties.
- Clips that come with the light. Useful for fixed positions. Raising the light means moving the clips.
Check before you hang
- The fixture is level, so light is even along the tray.
- The cord reaches an outlet without hanging across the trays.
- Water cannot drip onto the fixture or the plug. Keep plugs off the floor and above any tray.
- Several linked bars have their connecting cords supported. See linking bars to one timer.
