Best small fans for seedlings: what to check
Utah State Extension recommends a small fan at plant level, used gently. The best fan is one you can turn down.
This is a buying checklist with two Amazon listings at the end. Check that the fan has a low speed and fits your shelf.
What the source says
- A small fan gives good air circulation. Brief, gentle airflow 1 to several times a day for 5 to 10 minutes may strengthen seedlings.
- Too much direct airflow can damage seedlings and make them need water more often.
- A fan at plant level helps prevent damping-off along with letting soil dry between waterings and spacing plants.
What to look for
- Low speeds. Several speeds, or a speed control, so airflow can stay gentle. Some small clip fans advertise 10 speeds, for example AC Infinity's Cloudray S6 listing.
- Oscillation. Sweeping air avoids a constant blast on one tray.
- Mounting. A clip or stand that fits a wire shelf.
- Timer or controller. For the short bursts Utah State describes you need a schedule. See timers.
- Noise and power. Read the listing's watts. Add them to your running cost.
See fans and damping-off for how to use it.
