How to water seedlings: bottom watering and moisture

Both sources say to keep the mix moist but not soggy. They differ on how long to leave seedlings sitting in water.

Bottom watering

  • NDSU: use containers with drainage holes inside a second container that collects extra water. Pour water into the second container, not onto the seedlings. Add water several times as it moves up. Allow about an hour for the soil to soak it up, then drain the rest.
  • Oklahoma State: bottom watering is an option. Do not leave plants standing in water for more than 30 minutes.

So the sources differ: about an hour versus no more than 30 minutes. A shorter soak is the safer end if your mix stays wet, since NDSU links waterlogged soil to seedling death.

Keeping the right moisture

  • NDSU says soil should be moist but not soggy, and gives no fixed schedule. Check moisture daily, since indoor soil may dry slowly or unevenly.
  • Oklahoma State says to keep the top of the mix consistently moist until germination and until true leaves form, because a dry surface crusts and blocks emergence. After true leaves form, water when the mix feels dry or the pot feels light.
  • Utah State says to let the soil dry between waterings to help prevent damping-off. See fans and damping-off.

Using a dome

Oklahoma State says to mist or cover seeded trays with a dome or plastic wrap before germination. Utah State says to remove the dome once about half of the seeds have germinated.
